Out of Area Registration Policy
Out-of-Area Registration Policy
Heathcot Medical Practice may accept patients who live outside our usual practice boundary where it is appropriate, practical, and safe to do so.
NHS arrangements allow patients to apply to register with a GP practice even if they live outside the practice area. However, out-of-area registration is voluntary for GP practices, and acceptance remains at the discretion of the practice.
If you are accepted as an out-of-area patient, this will usually be without access to home visits from Heathcot Medical Practice. You must also be willing and able to attend any of our practice sites when required, including our Heathcot, Knaphill, and Brewery Road sites.
How we assess out-of-area registration requests
Before accepting an out-of-area registration, we will consider whether it is clinically appropriate and practical for you to be registered with us.
As part of this process, we may:
-
Ask your current or previous GP practice for a summary of your medical record
-
Ask why it is practical for you to attend Heathcot Medical Practice
-
Ask how often you are likely to be able to attend the practice in person
-
Ask whether you require home visits
-
Ask whether you are currently under the care of any community services near your home address
-
Consider whether your current or future health needs can be safely managed by the practice
We aim to notify patients of the outcome of their application within 21 working days.
If your registration is accepted
If you are accepted as an out-of-area patient, you will be able to access the usual range of services provided by Heathcot Medical Practice.
You will be expected to attend the practice when a face-to-face appointment is needed. This may be at any of our practice sites, depending on appointment availability and clinical need.
Home visits and urgent care
If you are registered as an out-of-area patient, Heathcot Medical Practice is not required to provide home visits to your home address.
If you become unwell and feel you need medical advice, please contact the practice in the first instance during our normal opening hours. If we feel you need urgent care closer to where you live, we may advise you to contact NHS 111, who can direct you to an appropriate local service.
This may include a local GP service, urgent treatment centre, minor injuries unit, A&E, or an out-of-hours provider, depending on your symptoms and circumstances.
If you need urgent medical help when the practice is closed, please contact NHS 111. In a medical emergency, always call 999.
When we may decline or review an out-of-area registration
We may decide that out-of-area registration is not appropriate if we feel it would not be safe, practical, or in your best interests.
This may apply if:
-
You require regular home visits
-
You have complex health needs that require local community support
-
You are unable to attend the practice when needed
-
You live too far away for your care to be safely managed by the practice
-
Your circumstances mean it would be more appropriate for you to register with a GP practice closer to home
If you are accepted as an out-of-area patient but your health needs later change, we may review your registration. If we feel your care would be better managed by a practice closer to your home address, we may advise you to register locally.
Out-of-area registration arrangements apply to patients living in England.
